Holy Family Icon

This icon of the Holy Family is hand-painted in egg tempera on solid gessoed wood. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand, polished, and hand-engraved in the halos. The panel is finished with a matte varnish and arrives with a certificate of authenticity, gift-ready for a home icon corner.

Iconography and Symbolism

The Theotokos holds the Christ Child close beside Saint Joseph the Betrothed, who bears a flowering staff, the traditional sign of his chastity and divine election as guardian of the Virgin. The Child holds doves, recalling the offering brought at His Presentation in the Temple. The inscriptions identify the Theotokos and “The Holy Joseph.”
Saint Joseph is honored in Orthodox tradition not as an ordinary husband but as the elder widower chosen to guard the Theotokos’s virginity and to protect the Christ Child in His earthly life, most notably in the flight into Egypt. This icon presents the earthly household in which the Incarnate Word was raised, a model of humility, protection, and quiet faithfulness.
