Holy Mandylion Icon

This icon of the Holy Mandylion is hand-painted in egg tempera on a solid linden wood panel. Oak braces into the back guard against warping. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand, set within a painted cloth ground bordered with a woven, tasseled pattern. Iconography and Symbolism

The icon shows the face of Christ alone, imprinted upon a cloth, with the inscription “ΤΟ ΑΓΙΟΝ ΜΑΝΔΗΛΙΟΝ,” “The Holy Mandylion.” According to Orthodox tradition, Christ pressed His face to a cloth and sent it to King Abgar of Edessa, giving the image its title, the Acheiropoieta, “not made by hands.” The halo bears the Greek “Ο ΩΝ,” “The One Who Is,” and the inscription “IC XC” identifies Him as Jesus Christ.
The Mandylion holds a unique place in Orthodox theology as the first icon, understood as the divine warrant for the entire practice of icon-painting.
