Theophany Miniature Icon

This hand-painted miniature Orthodox icon of the Theophany depicts the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River. Christ stands in the waters of the Jordan while Saint John the Baptist performs the baptism, with angels gathered nearby. Above Christ, the Holy Spirit appears in the form of a dove, completing the traditional representation of the revelation of the Holy Trinity.

Despite its miniature format, the icon features detailed hand-painted work, rich colors, gold leaf, gilding, and carefully executed handmade ornamentation. Painted with egg tempera on solid wood and finished with varnish, it offers a compact yet richly detailed expression of the traditional Byzantine iconographic scene.

The Theophany, also known as the Baptism of Christ, commemorates Christ’s baptism by Saint John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

Christ is shown standing in the waters of the Jordan, while Saint John reaches toward Him from the rocky bank. The angels on the opposite side are shown as witnesses to the sacred event and stand ready to serve Christ.

Above Christ, the Holy Spirit is represented as a dove descending from heaven. Together, Christ, the dove, and the divine presence above the scene express the revelation of the Holy Trinity at Christ’s Baptism.

The flowing waters of the Jordan and the surrounding rocky landscape are traditional elements of the composition.
