Iconography and Symbolism
The Theotokos Portaitissa Icon (Greek: Παναγία Πορταΐτισσα, “Keeper of the Gate”) is one of the most venerated icons of the Virgin Mary in the Orthodox Church. The original wonderworking icon is enshrined at the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece.

According to tradition, the icon miraculously appeared on the sea near Athos in the 9th century and came to rest at the monastery’s gate, where the Theotokos promised to guard it and all who enter. Since then, she has been honored as the Protector of the Holy Mountain and a shield for all Orthodox Christians.

In this image, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child on her left arm while pointing toward Him with her right hand, showing that salvation is found through her Son.
