The Holy Face Mandylion (also known as the Image Not Made by Hands or the Holy Napkin) is one of the most ancient and revered images of Christ in Orthodox tradition. According to the account, Christ imprinted His divine face onto a cloth, which was later brought to King Abgar of Edessa and became the first icon.

The icon depicts only the face of Christ, surrounded by a cloth. Above His head appear the Greek letters IC XC, meaning “Jesus Christ,” and within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His eternal divinity.

The Mandylion emphasizes both the humanity and divinity of Christ, being a direct witness to His Incarnation. It is venerated as the “prototype” of all Christian icons, affirming the legitimacy of sacred images.
