St Menas Icon

This icon of Saint Menas is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, with fine hand-engraved ornamentation worked into the halo to bring added depth and radiance. Iconography and Symbolism
Saint Menas is shown in half-length, holding a cross in one hand as the sign of his steadfast confession of Christ, his other hand raised in blessing toward the faithful. The inscription identifies him as “Holy Great Martyr Menas.” His calm, dignified bearing reflects the courage with which he faced torture and death rather than renounce his faith.

Born in Egypt in the late third century to Christian parents, Menas served as a soldier in the Roman army before withdrawing to the desert to live in prayer and asceticism during the persecutions of Diocletian. Compelled by his faith, he returned to declare himself a Christian before the authorities and was martyred for his confession. His relics, later enshrined in a monastery in the Egyptian desert that became a major center of pilgrimage in the early Church, were the site of numerous reported miracles, and his veneration spread widely throughout the Orthodox and Coptic worlds. He remains invoked as a protector of travelers and a powerful intercessor for those who suffer injustice.
