This hand-painted Byzantine-style icon depicts Saint Cecilia (also spelled Caecilia, Cecily), the early Christian martyr of Rome and patroness of sacred music. According to tradition, she sang to God in her heart during her wedding and martyrdom, making her one of the most beloved saints among musicians and choirs. She is usually shown with a musical instrument such as an organ or harp, symbolizing harmony, purity, and devotion.
In the Catholic calendar, Saint Cecilia is commemorated on November 22, while in some Eastern Catholic and Orthodox calendars she is also honored as a holy martyr of the early Church.
The icon of Saint Cecilia (Caecilia, Cecily) is a thoughtful gift for musicians, choir members, and families devoted to church music. It is also suitable for name days, baptisms, and new homes, bringing the blessing of a saint who embodied purity, joy, and praise to God.
Here she is!
The icon has been properly placed for all to see on the walk way into the loft. I've included a panoramic so that you can see our sanctuary space (very contemporary) but she's been placed where both the musicians can ask for her intercession on their way into the loft- and also for the parishioners to be edified by her gaze while praying.
So I know it doesn't seem big but it's huge for us. Felt like I had a family member here to greet me on my way in.
Thank you again so much for the icon. I'm so grateful!
