Christ the Bridegroom Icon

The Christ the Bridegroom Icon, also known as the Nymphios, presents Christ in one of the most profound and recognizable images of Holy Week. He is shown crowned with thorns and clothed in a red mantle. The icon invites the faithful to contemplate Christ’s love and to remain spiritually watchful as they prepare to encounter Him.

Christ is depicted with the crown of thorns upon His head, referring directly to His Passion and the mockery He endured before His Crucifixion. The red mantle recalls the royal garment placed upon Him by the soldiers in mockery, while also carrying a deeper meaning of sacrifice and divine kingship.

The title “Bridegroom” comes from the Gospel imagery of Christ as the Bridegroom and the Church as His Bride.

Hand-painted using traditional egg tempera on a thick natural wood panel, this icon features carefully layered colors, expressive facial details, and traditional gilding. The protective varnish helps preserve the painted surface and craftsmanship.
