This icon of Saint Menas is hand-painted in egg tempera on solid gessoed wood with a raised border. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand, polished, and hand-engraved in the halo. The panel is finished with a matte varnish and arrives with a certificate of authenticity, gift-ready for a home icon corner.
Iconography and Symbolism
Saint Menas is shown in half-length, holding a cross as the sign of his steadfast confession of Christ, his other hand raised in blessing. The inscription identifies him as “Holy Menas.”
Born in Egypt in the late third century, Menas served as a Roman soldier before withdrawing to the desert in prayer during the persecutions of Diocletian. He returned to confess his faith openly and was martyred for it. His relics, enshrined in a monastery in the Egyptian desert, became a major site of pilgrimage and reported miracles, and his veneration spread throughout the Orthodox and Coptic worlds.
