Christ Pantocrator Icon — Closed Book

This icon of Christ Pantocrator is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, symbolizing the uncreated and eternal light of God, with fine hand-engraved ornamentation worked into the gold to bring added depth and radiance to the halo. Iconography and Symbolism
Christ is shown in half-length, bearing the cruciform halo reserved for Him alone in Orthodox iconography, inscribed with the Greek letters “Ο ΩΝ” — “The One Who Is,” the divine name revealed to Moses at the burning bush, here affirming Christ’s full and eternal divinity. The inscription “IC XC” abbreviates “Jesus Christ” in Greek. With His right hand raised in blessing and the closed Gospel book held firmly in His left, He is shown as sovereign Teacher and Judge — the two fingers and thumb of His blessing hand traditionally understood to signify the union of His two natures, divine and human, and the Holy Trinity. The closed book, sealed and held rather than opened, presents Christ’s word as the fullness of divine truth entrusted to the Church.

The Pantocrator, meaning “Ruler of All” or “Almighty,” is among the oldest and most venerated icon types in the Church, tracing its lineage to the earliest surviving encaustic icon at Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai. It stands at the center of Orthodox worship, traditionally placed in the dome of the church looking down upon the faithful, and remains the icon most commonly found in the home icon corner as the focal image of Christian devotion.
