Traditionally in Orthodoxy the vigil lamps are placed before an icon as a reminder that Jesus Christ is the light of the world and illumines our souls.
– Never leave burning vigil lamps unattended.
– Refill the oil in your vigil lamp when one-quarter to one-third of the oil is used up. This will prevent the glass from overheating and causing unpleasant odors.
– Keep flammable items away from the lamps, especially above it.
– Candles placed on, or near tables, altars, or shrines, must be watched by an adult.
