Iconography and Symbolism

The name Kardiotissa, meaning “of the Heart,” refers to the characteristic depiction of the Mother of God holding the Christ Child close to her heart. This intimate relationship between Mother and Child gives the icon its distinctive character and emphasizes the tenderness and love expressed in the image.

Panagia Kardiotissa is closely associated with the historic Kera Kardiotissa Monastery in Crete.  According to tradition, the earlier miraculous icon was taken to Rome during the Venetian period; a replacement icon was installed at the monastery in 1735 and is also regarded as miraculous.

The luminous gold-leaf background complements the composition of the Mother and Child and recalls the radiant backgrounds traditionally found in Orthodox iconography.
