Iconography and Symbolism
The Glycophilousa (“Sweet-Kissing”) is an iconographic type of the Theotokos in which the Virgin Mary and Christ Child are shown in a particularly intimate and tender embrace.
The Greek inscription Η ΓΛΥΚΟΦΙΛΟΥΣΑ identifies the icon as the Glycophilousa. The small angelic figure in the upper corner adds a heavenly element to the composition.
The luminous gold-leaf background enhances the sacred character of the image and recalls the radiant backgrounds traditionally associated with Byzantine and Orthodox icons.
