The Virgin Mary of Kykkos (also known as the Theotokos of Kykkou) is one of the most revered Marian icons of the Orthodox Church, enshrined at the famous Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus. Tradition holds that it was painted by St Luke the Evangelist, making it one of the most ancient and precious icons of the Mother of God.

The Theotokos is depicted in the Hodegetria type, pointing with her hand toward Christ, who blesses with His right hand and holds a Gospel in His left. This emphasizes her role as “She Who Shows the Way” to her Son, the Savior of the world.

Above the Virgin appear the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.” Next to Christ are the letters IC XC, an abbreviation for “Jesus Christ.” His halo bears the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His divinity.
