This Orthodox icon is made using the traditional silkscreen technique on cotton canvas, mounted on solid natural carved wood. The background has a polished gold gilding effect (burnished mirror finish), giving it a luminous and reflective surface.
It includes a leather strap for hanging and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The surface is varnished for durability and protection, preserving the brilliance of the image.
Iconography & Symbolism
The Theotokos Pelagonitissa Icon (Greek: Πελαγονίτισσα) belongs to the Eleusa (Tender Mercy) type, but with a distinctive and more dynamic composition. The Christ Child embraces His Mother energetically, placing His arm around her neck and His feet against her chest, symbolizing both childlike love and the prophetic foreshadowing of His Passion.
The Virgin’s expression reveals tender sorrow — awareness of the suffering that awaits her Son — while Christ’s pose shows divine energy and joy. This icon embodies the mystery of Incarnation joined with sacrifice.
Above the Virgin’s head are the Greek letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God,” and beside Christ are IC XC, meaning “Jesus Christ.” The cross within His halo bears the letters Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is.”
The original Pelagonitissa icon is associated with the region of Pelagonia (modern North Macedonia) and is one of the most expressive Byzantine depictions of the Mother and Child.
