Iconography & Symbolism
The Theotokos of Vladimir Icon (Russian: Владимирская икона Божией Матери) is one of the most venerated Orthodox icons in the world and the most famous example of the Eleusa (Tenderness) type. The Virgin Mary is depicted holding the Christ Child close to her cheek, expressing divine love, compassion, and mercy.
Above the Virgin are the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.” Beside Christ appear IC XC, the abbreviation for “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His divine essence.
The original icon, traditionally attributed to St Luke the Evangelist, was brought from Constantinople to Russia and enshrined in Vladimir, later becoming a protectress of the Russian people and state. It is believed to have interceded in saving Moscow from invasion multiple times.
This sacred image represents both the divine tenderness of the Mother of God and her constant intercession for humankind.
