Iconography and Symbolism
The Theotokos of the Passion Icon (Greek: Παναγία του Πάθους) portrays the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child while two Archangels — Michael and Gabriel — appear above, carrying the instruments of the Passion: the cross, nails, and spear.

At the sight of these symbols, the Child Christ turns toward His Mother in fear and clings to her, while one sandal slips from His foot. The Virgin’s sorrowful yet serene face expresses both compassion and acceptance of her Son’s destiny. This touching composition reveals the deep human love between Mother and Child and the divine mystery of salvation through suffering.

Above the Virgin are the letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God), and beside Christ, IC XC (Jesus Christ). The gold background symbolizes the eternal light of God’s kingdom and the triumph of love over pain.
