Iconography & Symbolism
The Theotokos Athonitissa Icon (Greek: Παναγία Ἀθωνίτισσα, “Our Lady of Mount Athos”) is a majestic, full-body depiction of the Virgin Mary as Protectress and Queen of the Holy Mountain. The Theotokos stands with her arms open in prayer and blessing, symbolizing her maternal intercession and the grace she extends to all who dwell on Mount Athos and beyond.
Beneath her feet lies the mountain of Athos, the sacred monastic peninsula dedicated to her since ancient times. Around her are the saints and ascetics of Mount Athos, representing the multitude of holy men who have lived under her spiritual care for over a millennium.
This composition emphasizes her role as the Abbess and Guardian of Athos, the only woman permitted spiritual dominion there. Her open arms express divine mercy, protection, and the welcoming embrace of the Mother of God toward all who seek salvation.
Above her appear the Greek letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Meter Theou) – “Mother of God,” and around Christ, IC XC, meaning “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo, the cross bears Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is.” The polished gold background symbolizes the heavenly light and eternal presence of the Theotokos among the saints.
