The Theotokos Eleusa (Greek: Tenderness) is one of the most beloved Marian icons. Also known as the Virgin of Tenderness or Panagia Glykophilousa (“Sweet Kissing”), it depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child with their cheeks pressed together in an intimate embrace.

This icon symbolizes the deep love and mercy of God revealed through the Incarnation, and the intimate bond between the Mother of God and her Son.

Above the Virgin are the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.” Next to Christ appear IC XC, the abbreviation for “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His divinity.
