The name comes from the hymn “Axion Esti” – It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos – first revealed by an angel to a monk in the 10th century at the monastery of Karyes on Athos.

In iconography, the Theotokos is shown enthroned, holding the Christ Child, who blesses with His right hand and holds a scroll or Gospel in His left. Above her head are the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.” Beside Christ appear the letters IC XC, an abbreviation for “Jesus Christ,” while His halo bears the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu), meaning “He Who Is,” affirming His divinity.

The Axion Esti icon is closely connected to the liturgical life of the Church, especially during Marian feasts and the Divine Liturgy, where the hymn is sung. It is considered a guardian of Mount Athos and a comfort for all Orthodox Christians who turn to the Theotokos for intercession.
