St Matrona of Moscow Icon

This icon of Saint Matrona of Moscow is silkscreen printed on gessoed cotton canvas, mounted on a solid carved wood board, and handmade in Greece. The halo, inscriptions, and ornamental details are hand-painted, and gold leaf is applied by hand to the background. Iconography and Symbolism

Saint Matrona is shown veiled in the simple headscarf of a Russian laywoman, her eyes closed, her hand raised in blessing while she holds a prayer rope. The inscription identifies her as “Blessed Matrona.”
Born blind in Russia in 1881, Matrona was granted from childhood the gifts of healing and spiritual insight, and later in life lost the use of her legs as well, yet continued for decades to receive the many who came to her for prayer and counsel, even through the upheavals of Soviet persecution. She reposed in Moscow in 1952 and was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1999, becoming one of the most beloved and widely venerated saints of the twentieth century, especially sought by those suffering illness and hardship.
