Iconography and Symbolism

Saint Seraphim is shown in monastic dress, his fingers raised in blessing and a prayer rope wrapped around his other hand, a cross visible at his chest. The inscription identifies him as “Holy Seraphim of Sarov.”
Born in Russia in 1754, Seraphim entered monastic life at Sarov Monastery and spent decades in solitary prayer and asceticism in the surrounding forest. Renowned for his gentleness, healing gifts, and radiant joy, he greeted all who came to him with the words “My joy, Christ is risen!” His teaching on the acquisition of the Holy Spirit as the true goal of Christian life remains one of the most treasured texts in Orthodox spirituality, and he is among the most beloved saints of the Russian Church.
