Iconography and Symbolism
The Christ Sinai Icon is one of the most ancient and revered images of Christ in the world. The original 6th-century icon is preserved in St Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai, Egypt. It is considered the earliest surviving representation of Christ Pantocrator — the Almighty and Judge of all.

In this icon, Christ is shown in half-figure, blessing with His right hand and holding the Gospel in His left. The asymmetry of His face is deeply symbolic: one side reveals divine mercy and compassion, the other reflects divine authority and judgment. This visual balance captures the mystery of Christ as both perfect God and perfect Man.

The letters IC XC appear beside His head, meaning “Jesus Christ,” while within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν – “He Who Is.” The gold background represents the eternal and uncreated light of God.
