Iconography & Symbolism
The Crucifixion of Christ Icon (Greek: Ἡ Σταύρωσις) depicts the moment of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross for the salvation of the world. The Virgin Mary and Saint John the Theologian stand in sorrow beneath the Cross, representing the Church and all humanity united in redemption.
Above the Cross are the Greek letters Ο ΒΣΛΤΔΞ, an abbreviation of “Ὁ Βασιλεὺς τῆς Δόξης” – “The King of Glory.” Next to Christ’s head appear IC XC, meaning “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His eternal divinity even in death.
The Crucifixion icon reminds the faithful of the depth of divine love and the mystery of salvation through the Cross — the Tree of Life.
