This icon of the Theotokos of Tenderness is hand-painted in egg tempera on a solid round gessoed wood panel with a raised border. Oak braces set into the back guard against warping. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand and polished to a smooth sheen, with fine hand-engraved ornamentation worked into the halo. Iconography and Symbolism
The Theotokos holds the Christ Child close, her cheek pressed to His, in the composition known as the Eleousa, “Tenderness.” The inscription “ΜΡ ΘΥ” abbreviates the Greek for Mother of God.
