The Theotokos Platytera of the Heavens, meaning “More Spacious than the Heavens,” is one of the most significant iconographic representations of the Mother of God. In this composition, the Virgin Mary stands with her hands raised in prayer, while Christ Emmanuel appears within a radiant medallion before her, expressing the mystery of the Incarnation.
This hand-painted icon is created with traditional egg tempera on a thick natural plywood panel. It is enriched with 24K genuine gold leaf, detailed gilding, polished gold, and a beautifully decorated polished gold halo. The icon is finished with protective varnish and ships in a protective box.
Iconography and Symbolism
The title “Platytera of the Heavens” refers to the mystery that the Virgin Mary contained within her womb the Son of God, whom the heavens themselves cannot contain. The image therefore expresses one of the central mysteries of Orthodox Christianity: the Incarnation of the eternal Word.
The raised hands of the Theotokos represent prayer and intercession. The medallion containing Christ Emmanuel represents Christ within the womb of His Mother at the mystery of the Incarnation.
The Platytera is traditionally placed in the central apse of Orthodox churches above the altar, where the image visually connects heaven and earth and reminds the faithful of the mystery of God becoming man.
