Panagia Gorgoepikoos Icon

This icon of the Panagia Gorgoepikoos is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel with a raised border, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. Oak braces (slats) set into the back of the panel guard against warping, ensuring the icon remains stable for generations of veneration. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, symbolizing the uncreated light of God surrounding the Mother of God and her Son. The panel is finished with a matte varnish for lasting protection and arrives with a certificate of authenticity, gift-ready for presentation in the home or for placement in a private icon corner.

Iconography and Symbolism
The Theotokos is shown holding the Christ Child on her arm, her hand raised gently toward Him, in a composition close to the Hodegetria type. The inscription “Η ΓΟΡΓΟΫΠΗΚΟΟΣ” identifies her by her renowned title, “She Who Is Quick to Hear,” a name given to her for her swift response to the prayers of the faithful. The inscription “ΜΡ ΘΥ” abbreviates the Greek “Meter Theou,” Mother of God, while “IC XC” identifies the Child as Jesus Christ.

The original Gorgoepikoos icon has been enshrined for centuries at Dochiariou Monastery on Mount Athos, where, according to tradition, the Theotokos herself spoke to a monk who had persisted in passing before her icon without reverence, rebuking him and revealing her title as the one “quick to hear.” The icon has since become renowned throughout the Orthodox world for the swiftness of its intercession, sought by the faithful in times of urgent need, illness, and danger, and is among the most beloved of the Athonite wonderworking icons of the Mother of God.
