This icon of Saint Paisios the Athonite is hand-painted in egg tempera on solid gessoed wood. Oak braces set into the back guard against warping. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand, polished, and hand-engraved in the halo. The panel is finished with a matte varnish and arrives with a certificate of authenticity, gift-ready for a home icon corner.
Iconography and Symbolism
Saint Paisios is shown in the dark monastic habit and klobuk of an Athonite monk, holding a scroll inscribed with his own words on love and humility, a prayer rope in hand as a sign of unceasing prayer. The inscription identifies him as “Saint Paisios the Hagiorite.”
Born in Cappadocia in 1924, Paisios became one of the most beloved elders of Mount Athos in the twentieth century, renowned for his humility, discernment, and simple, direct counsel to the thousands of pilgrims who sought him out. He was formally glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2015, becoming one of the most widely venerated saints of recent times across the Orthodox world.
