Resurrection of Christ Icon

This icon of the Resurrection of Christ is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand, and the panel is finished with a protective varnish and arrives with a certificate of authenticity, gift-ready for presentation in the home or for placement in a private icon corner.

Iconography and Symbolism
Christ is shown standing upon the stone of the open, empty tomb, robed in radiant white as a sign of His glorified body, His right hand raised in blessing and His left hand grasping a banner bearing the red cross of victory over death. Behind Him, a mandorla of deep green and gold rays proclaims the uncreated light of His divinity breaking forth into the world. The cruciform halo bears the Greek inscription “Ο ΩΝ,” “The One Who Is,” affirming His eternal nature even in this triumphant moment. The Church Slavonic inscription above reads “The Resurrection of Christ.” Broken and rent, the rocky landscape around the tomb bears witness to the earthquake described in the Gospels at the moment of His rising.

This image proclaims the central mystery of the Christian faith: that Christ, having voluntarily accepted death upon the Cross, has trampled down death by death, opening the way to eternal life for all who believe in Him. Pascha, the Feast of Feasts, is the very heart of the Orthodox liturgical year, and this icon captures its triumphant proclamation, sung throughout Bright Week: “Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.”
