Guardian Angel Icon

This icon of the Holy Guardian Angel is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid pine wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, symbolizing the uncreated light of God in whose presence the angel eternally dwells. Iconography and Symbolism
The angel is shown in half-length, robed in white and bearing great wings, holding a staff in one hand and a flowering branch in the other, while a medallion bearing the monogram of Christ, “IC † XC,” rests upon his open palm — a sign that the angel’s protection flows entirely from Christ, whom he serves. The inscription identifies him as “Holy Guardian Angel.”

Orthodox tradition teaches that every baptized Christian is given a guardian angel at the time of their baptism, an unseen protector who guides, defends, and intercedes for the soul throughout life and stands beside it at the hour of death. This icon type is among the most personal and beloved in Orthodox devotion, often given to children at baptism or kept near the bed as a constant reminder of the angel’s watchful care.
