Theotokos Sweet Kissing Icon

The inscription “ΜΡ ΘΥ” abbreviates the Greek “Meter Theou,” Mother of God, while “IC XC” identifies the Child as Jesus Christ.

The Eleousa is among the most beloved Marian icon types in Orthodox tradition, its most renowned example being the Theotokos of Vladimir, brought from Constantinople to Kievan Rus in the twelfth century and revered for centuries as one of Russia’s most sacred images. Icons of this type invite the faithful to contemplate the Theotokos not only as intercessor but as the compassionate Mother of all Christians, whose love for her Son mirrors the mercy Christians seek in prayer.
