Christ the Bridegroom Icon

This icon of Christ the Bridegroom is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, symbolizing the uncreated and eternal light of God, with fine hand-engraved ornamentation worked into the gold to bring added depth and radiance to the halo. The panel is finished with a protective varnish and arrives with a certificate of authenticity, gift-ready for presentation in the home or for placement in a private icon corner.

Iconography and Symbolism
Christ is shown crowned with thorns and clothed in the red robe placed upon Him in mockery by the soldiers, His hands bound with rope and holding a reed in place of a royal scepter — every detail drawn directly from the Gospel account of His suffering before the Crucifixion. Traces of blood mark His brow beneath the crown. Yet He is shown not as a broken figure but with a calm, dignified countenance, His divine halo undiminished, revealing that even in the depths of His humiliation, His glory as the Son of God remains unhidden. The inscription “IC XC” abbreviates “Jesus Christ” in Greek.

This icon type takes its name, “the Bridegroom,” from the parable of the wise and foolish virgins and from the hymn sung at the Bridegroom Matins services of Holy Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday: “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh at midnight.” Christ is here revealed as the Bridegroom of the Church, who comes not in worldly triumph but through voluntary suffering, uniting Himself to humanity through the Cross. The icon is central to the devotion of Holy Week, inviting the faithful to watchfulness and repentance as they walk with Christ toward His Passion and Resurrection.
