Theotokos Hodegetria Icon

This icon of the Theotokos Hodegetria is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel with a raised border, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. Oak braces (slats) set into the back of the panel guard against warping, ensuring the icon remains stable for generations of veneration. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, symbolizing the uncreated light of God surrounding the Mother of God and her Son, with fine hand-engraved ornamentation worked into the gold to bring depth and radiance to the halos. Iconography and Symbolism
The Theotokos is shown holding the Christ Child on her left arm while gesturing toward Him with her right hand — the defining gesture of the Hodegetria type, meaning “She Who Shows the Way.” Rather than drawing attention to herself, she directs the faithful to her Son as the way, the truth, and the life. Christ is shown not as an infant but in the form of a small, dignified figure robed in gold, His hand raised in blessing, signifying His full divinity present even in His human infancy. The inscription “ΜΡ ΘΥ” abbreviates the Greek “Meter Theou,” Mother of God, while “IC XC” identifies the Child as Jesus Christ. The three stars upon her maphorion, at the forehead and shoulders, are the traditional sign of her virginity before, during, and after the birth of Christ.

The Hodegetria is among the oldest icon types in Orthodox tradition, its lineage traced by pious legend to an image painted by the Evangelist Luke and long enshrined in the Hodegon Monastery in Constantinople, from which the type takes its name. Copied and venerated across every Orthodox nation for centuries, it remains one of the most beloved and theologically central images of the Mother of God, portraying her eternal role as intercessor who leads all who come to her toward Christ.
