Iconography & Symbolism
The Theotokos Softener of Evil Hearts (also known as the Prophecy of Simeon Icon or the Seven Swords Icon) is one of the most beloved Marian icons in the Orthodox Church. The Virgin Mary is shown with seven swords piercing her heart, symbolizing the prophecy of St Simeon in the Temple: “a sword shall pierce through your own soul also” (Luke 2:35).
This icon represents the Theotokos’ deep compassion and sorrow for the suffering of the world, as well as her intercession in softening hardened hearts and reconciling those in conflict. The faithful venerate this icon for peace in families, healing of enmity, and mercy in times of turmoil.
Above the Virgin appear the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.”

In the Orthodox calendar, the Theotokos Softener of Evil Hearts is commemorated on August 13, the eve of the Dormition of the Theotokos.
