The Theotokos It Is Truly Meet Icon (Greek: Παναγία Ἄξιόν ἐστιν) is one of the most beloved icons of the Virgin Mary. The original wonderworking image is kept in the Protaton Church on Mount Athos. According to tradition, the Archangel Gabriel appeared before this icon and sang the hymn “It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos,” revealing the sacred words that remain part of Orthodox worship today.

In this depiction, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child in her left arm while gently inclining her head toward Him in compassion and love. The Child blesses with His right hand and holds a scroll in His left, symbolizing divine wisdom. Above the Virgin appear the Greek letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Mother of God), and beside Christ, IC XC (Jesus Christ). The gold background represents the heavenly light that surrounds the Theotokos and her Son.
