This is a premium quality silkscreen icon, handmade with gold leaf on cotton canvas and mounted on solid natural carved wood. Halos, inscriptions, and ornaments are hand-painted, while the image is varnished for long-lasting protection. The icon is ready for hanging, featuring a leather strap on the back, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Iconography & Symbolism
The icon depicts the Theotokos Great Grace (Greek: Megalochari), the wonderworking Marian icon venerated at the Island of Tinos in Greece. The icon is considered one of the most miraculous in the Orthodox world, associated with healings, protection, and the Virgin’s intercession for the faithful.
Tradition holds that the original icon was revealed in 1823 to Saint Pelagia, a nun of Tinos, through a vision of the Theotokos. Soon after, it became a national symbol of hope and divine aid for the Greek people during the War of Independence.
Above the Virgin are the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.” Beside Christ are the letters IC XC, the abbreviation of “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His divinity.
Feast Day
The Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15) is especially associated with the Great Grace icon at Tinos, where thousands of pilgrims gather each year.
