Iconography & Symbolism
The Theotokos Axion Esti (Greek: Ἄξιόν ἐστιν, meaning “It Is Truly Meet”) is one of the most revered icons of the Virgin Mary, enshrined at the Protaton Church in Karyes on Mount Athos. According to tradition, in the 10th century, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to a monk and sang a new hymn before this icon, which has since become central in Orthodox worship: “It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos…”
The Theotokos is depicted enthroned with the Christ Child in her arms, blessing with His right hand and holding a scroll in His left. Above the Virgin appear the Greek letters MP ΘΥ (Meter Theou), meaning “Mother of God.” Next to Christ are IC XC, the abbreviation for “Jesus Christ.” His halo bears the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is,” affirming His divinity.
This icon is venerated as wonderworking, offering protection, comfort, and the Virgin’s intercession to the faithful worldwide.
