Saints Cyril and Methodius

This hand-painted Orthodox icon depicts Saints Cyril and Methodius (also known as Constantine the Philosopher and Methodios, Kiril i Metodii), the Equal-to-the-Apostles and Enlighteners of the Slavs. Born in Thessaloniki in the 9th century, they created the Glagolitic alphabet, the foundation of the Cyrillic script, and translated the Holy Scriptures into the Slavic language. Their missionary work laid the foundation for Christianity in the Slavic lands.

In the Orthodox calendar, Saints Cyril and Methodius are commemorated on May 11, and in the Catholic calendar, they are honored together on February 14 as patrons of Europe.
