This hand-painted Orthodox icon depicts Saint Archangel Gabriel (also known as Gavriil, Gavriel), the great messenger of God. He is most often remembered for announcing the Incarnation to the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation, as well as appearing to the Prophet Daniel and to Zacharias, the father of Saint John the Forerunner. In iconography, Archangel Gabriel is shown holding a lily, a staff, or a sphere, symbolizing purity and his role as herald of divine mysteries.
In the Orthodox calendar, Archangel Gabriel is commemorated on March 26 (the Synaxis after the Annunciation), on July 13, and together with all the Bodiless Powers on November 8.
The icon of Archangel Gabriel (Gavriil, Gavriel) is a beautiful gift for name days, baptisms, expectant mothers, and new homes, invoking his intercession for protection, joy, and the reception of God’s good news. It is also recommended as a companion to the icon of Archangel Michael in family prayer corners.
