Theotokos Tenderness (Cretan)

This hand-painted Orthodox icon of the Theotokos Eleusa presents the Virgin Mary embracing the Christ Child in a tender and intimate composition. The close contact between the Mother and Child expresses the profound love and tenderness characteristic of the Eleusa iconographic type. The icon is painted with egg tempera on a piece of aged wood selected by the iconographer. The wood is over 100 years old and retains a distinctive, naturally aged character, giving each icon an individual presence. 23K gold leaf and gilding enrich the halo and ornamental areas, while an aged-look technique developed by the artist enhances the appearance of the icon and complements the character of the old wood. The distinctive form of the wooden panel further contributes to its unique character.

Iconography and Symbolism

The Eleusa, meaning “Tenderness” or “Mercy,” is a traditional iconographic type of the Theotokos in which the Virgin Mary and Christ Child are shown in close, affectionate contact. The Virgin gently inclines her head toward Christ, while the Child turns toward His Mother. Their faces and gestures create a sense of tenderness and intimate connection, while still retaining the solemn and sacred character of Byzantine iconography.

The Christ Child is held securely by the Theotokos and shown with the attributes of the incarnate Word. The rich garments, halos, and gilded details emphasize the divine dignity of both Mother and Child.
