Saint Andrew the First-Called Icon

The Saint Andrew the First-Called Icon presents the Holy and All-Praised Apostle Andrew, one of the first disciples to follow Christ. Known in Orthodox tradition as the First-Called, Saint Andrew was the brother of the Apostle Peter and became an important preacher of the Gospel.

Iconography and Symbolism:

Saint Andrew was originally a fisherman and was among the first disciples called by Christ. According to the Gospel of John, Andrew first followed Christ and then brought his brother Simon Peter to Him, saying that they had found the Messiah. This is an important part of the Apostle’s identity as the First-Called. After Pentecost, Saint Andrew traveled widely preaching the Gospel. Orthodox tradition particularly associates his missionary work with regions around the Black Sea and with the founding of the Christian community at Byzantium, which later became Constantinople. Painted on a thick natural wood panel, this handcrafted icon combines traditional Orthodox iconography with a substantial wooden foundation and protective varnish.
