Our Lady of the Sign Icon

This hand-painted Orthodox icon of Our Lady of the Sign presents the Virgin Mary with her hands raised in prayer, while Chris appears within a medallion at her chest. The composition is one of the distinctive representations of the Theotokos in Byzantine iconography and emphasizes the mystery of the Incarnation.

The icon is painted by hand with egg tempera on a solid wood panel. Gold leaf and gilding enrich the sacred composition, while hand-engraved ornamentation adds detail to the halos.

Our Lady of the Sign is traditionally associated with the prophecy of Isaiah: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.” The icon visually expresses this mystery by showing Christ Emmanuel within a circular medallion before the Virgin.

The Virgin Mary is depicted in the orans posture, with both hands raised in prayer. This gesture emphasizes her role as the one who receives and bears the incarnate Son of God.

Christ is shown at the center, blessing and holding a scroll. His presence within the medallion signifies that the eternal Son of God has taken human form through the Virgin Mary.
