Annunciation Icon

This hand-painted Orthodox icon of the Annunciation depicts the meeting of Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary at the moment when the angel announces the coming of Christ. The composition follows the traditional Byzantine iconographic representation of the feast, with Archangel Gabriel approaching the Virgin Mary and extending his hand in greeting.

The icon is painted by hand with egg tempera on a solid wood panel. Gold leaf and gilding enrich the sacred composition, while hand-made ornamentation adds detail to the garments and architectural elements.

The Annunciation is one of the central events of the Christian Gospel and marks the beginning of the Incarnation of Christ. Archangel Gabriel is shown approaching the Virgin Mary as the messenger of God, announcing that she will become the Mother of the Son of God.

Above the scene, the Holy Spirit is represented in the form of a dove, with rays descending toward the Virgin Mary. This emphasizes the divine action taking place at the moment of the Annunciation.
