This icon of Saint Innocent of Alaska is silkscreen printed on gessoed cotton canvas, mounted on a solid carved wood board, and handmade in Greece. Iconography and Symbolism
In the left hand St.Innocent holds a decorated book of the Gospels. This highlights his lifelong work as a missionary translator. He creates the first written alphabet for the native Aleut people and translated the Bible into their languages. The text of the icon calls him the “Enlightener of Alska and Siberia”, honoring how he traveled across freezing lands via dog sled, kayak, and reindeer to spread the Christian faith.
