This icon of Theotokos Platytera is silkscreen printed on gessoed cotton canvas, mounted on a solid carved wood board, and handmade in Greece. Iconography and Symbolism
The Virgin Mary is depicted with her arms outstretched and upraised in the ancient posture of prayer. The position of Christ in the central medallion represents the Incarnation-showing Him hidden within his mother’s womb before birth, yet dynamically revealing Him to the world. Because of its significance for the Incarnation, this specific composition is traditionally painted high up above the alter in Orthodox churches, acting as a visual bridge between Heaven and Earth.
