St George Icon — Dragon Slayer

Iconography and Symbolism
Saint George is shown mounted on a white horse, driving his spear into the jaws of the dragon beneath him, while in the tower behind him a king, queen, and their daughter look on in wonder. This composition illustrates the beloved legend of Saint George rescuing a princess from a dragon that had terrorized her city, accepting to slay the beast only on the condition that the townspeople embrace the Christian faith. The inscription identifies him as “St. George the Trophy-bearer,” a title recalling his ultimate victory as a martyr who triumphed over death through his confession of Christ.

Though the dragon-slaying tale developed as pious legend centuries after his death, it has long been understood by the Church less as literal history than as a vivid image of the spiritual victory George won through faith — the conquest of evil, represented by the dragon, through the power of Christ. Born in Cappadocia and martyred under Emperor Diocletian in the year 303 for his open confession of Christianity, George remains one of the most beloved and widely venerated saints in the Orthodox world, honored as a protector of soldiers, travelers, and all who face trial with courage.
