Theotokos Sweet Kissing Icon

This icon of the Theotokos Sweet Kissing is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid linden wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, symbolizing the uncreated light of God surrounding the Mother of God and her Son. Iconography and Symbolism
The Theotokos is shown pressing her cheek tenderly against the Christ Child’s, her hand gently cradling His head, while He reaches to embrace her — a composition known in the Orthodox tradition as the Eleousa, meaning “Tenderness” or “Mercy,” and also called Glykophilousa, “the Sweetly Kissing One.” Unlike the more formal Hodegetria type, in which the Theotokos gestures toward Christ as the way of salvation, the Eleousa draws the faithful into the intimate bond of mother and Son, foreshadowing through this closeness the compassion Christ would show toward all humanity. The inscription “ΜΡ ΘΥ” abbreviates the Greek “Meter Theou,” Mother of God, while “IC XC” identifies the Child as Jesus Christ.

The Eleousa is among the most beloved Marian icon types in Orthodox tradition, its most renowned example being the Theotokos of Vladimir, brought from Constantinople to Kievan Rus in the twelfth century and revered for centuries as one of Russia’s most sacred images. Icons of this type invite the faithful to contemplate the Theotokos not only as intercessor but as the compassionate Mother of all Christians, whose love for her Son mirrors the mercy Christians seek in prayer.
