St George Icon

Born in Cappadocia to a Christian family, George rose to the rank of tribune in the Roman army under Emperor Diocletian. When the emperor ordered the persecution of Christians, George openly renounced his rank and privilege, declaring his faith before the imperial court. He endured prolonged and brutal torture with steadfast resolve before his execution in the year 303, becoming one of the most venerated martyrs in the Church — the “Trophy-bearer” who won the victory of faith over death. He is invoked as a protector of soldiers, travelers, farmers, and all who face trial with courage.
