Iconography & Symbolism
The Panagia Axion Estin Icon (Greek: Ἄξιόν ἐστιν, meaning “It Is Truly Meet”) depicts the Theotokos holding the Christ Child in the traditional Byzantine style. Above her head appear the letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (Meter Theou) – “Mother of God” – while beside Christ are IC XC, meaning “Jesus Christ.” Within His halo is the cross inscribed with Ω Ο Ν (Omega, Omicron, Nu) – “He Who Is.”
This icon is associated with one of the most revered miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary, housed in the Protaton Church on Mount Athos. According to tradition, the Archangel Gabriel miraculously inscribed the hymn “It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos” before this icon. It remains a symbol of the Virgin’s mercy and intercession for all humankind.
