Virgin Mary Tenderness Icon

This icon of the Theotokos of Tenderness is hand-painted in the traditional egg tempera technique on a solid pine wood panel, following the canons preserved by the Orthodox iconographic tradition. 24 karat gold leaf is applied by hand to the background, with fine hand-engraved ornamentation worked into the halo to bring added depth and radiance. Iconography and Symbolism

The inscription “ΜΡ ΘΥ” abbreviates the Greek “Meter Theou,” Mother of God.

The Eleousa is among the most beloved Marian icon types in Orthodox tradition, its most renowned example being the Theotokos of Vladimir, brought from Constantinople to Kievan Rus in the twelfth century and revered for centuries as one of Russia’s most sacred images.
